The name of Pavie first appears in Bordeaux literature during the mid-19th century and it seems the word derives from the word 'Pavies' that describes the rich and deep coloured peaches that were once grown on the site. The estate appears to have gone through the hands of four separate owners and the creation of Pavie, as it is known today, came about in the late 19th century when Ferdinand Bouffard arrived. Bouffard is without a doubt an important person in the development of Chateau Pavie. In 1918 he sold the estate to Albert Porte and in 1943 passed the vineyards to Alexandre Valette. On his death in 1957 it was passed to his grandson, Jean-Paul Valette who took over the management of the vineyard. Today the estate is owned by Gerard Perse. In 2012 Chateau Pavie was up-graded to First Growth Premier Grand Cru Classe 'A' and is now rated alongside the other great wines of St Emilion, Ausone and Cheval Blanc. The vines account for 37 hectares and the varieties are dominated by 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Two wines are produced; Chateau Pavie and Aromes de Pavie.
